#Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz Draws Heat For “Threatening” Tweet To Michael Cohen

Controversial Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz [R-FL] has drawn heat to himself—including calls for a Congressional censure—for a tweet to President Donald Trump’s former “fixer,” attorney Michael Cohen.

On the eve of Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee, where Cohen is expected to, according to the Wall Street Journal, “publicly accuse the president of engaging—while in office—in criminal conduct related to a hush-money payment to a porn star,” Gaetz—A Trump loyalist tweeted a message to Cohen that some state is “threatening” and “witness tampering.”

Here is Gaetz’s tweet:

Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…

Gaetz’s tweet immediately drew fire from the internet and liberal media.

CNN’s Chris Cizella, for example, stated Gaetz’s tweet “straight-up threatened” Cohen, while a former federal prosecutor told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Gaetz’s tweet is witness intimidation.

Likewise, Twitter went after Gaetz with a vengeance—with over 42,000 (and counting) replies to his tweet.

In a phone interview with the Daily Beast, Gaetz denied his tweet was a threat.

“No,” he stressed, “it is challenging the veracity and character of a witness. We do it everyday. We typically do it during people’s testimony.”

“This is what it looks like to compete in the marketplace of ideas,” he added.
