Ron Book–one of Florida’s most influential lobbyists–claims he merely had a car accident. Cops, and the man who he slammed into, say differently.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—Deryck Rivera was driving home late Sunday night from a movie when his car was slammed into by a Lamborghini, driven by Ron Bloom, one of Florida’s most influential (and controversial) lobbyists.
The collision caused Rivera’s Ford Focus to flip and land on its roof.
When Florida Highway Patrol arrived, they smelled alcohol on Mr. Bloom.
When FHP troopers asked Mr. Bloom to submit to a field sobriety test, he refused. As a result, troopers arrested Book and DUI, first offense; DUI with damage to another’s property or person; and refusal to submit to a DUI test.
Book posted $1500 bond Monday morning.
“The Broward State Attorney’s Office has requested that Gov. Ron DeSantis assign the case to another jurisdiction to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest,” according to the Sun Sentinel, “as Book and Broward State Attorney Mike Satz are personal friends.”
Ron Book’s daughter, Lauren, is a Democratic Florida state senator representing parts of Broward County whose first wedding was featured on an episode of Platinum Weddings.
Lauren Book has since divorced and remarried.
